The Boy Who Loved Ants: Edward O.Wilson

Today we add a new category at Wrapped In Foil, the e-book. The Boy Who Loved Ants: Edward O.Wilson by Sara van Dyck is a children’s biography available at Amazon as a Kindle Edition, as well as electronically at Smashwords. The-boy-who-loved-ants

Dr. Edward O. Wilson, or E. O. Wilson as he is also known, has worn many hats over his lifetime, and is renowned for his studies of ants, island biogeography, sociobiology and biodiversity. Author van Dyck makes his life story accessible to children by emphasizing how his interest in nature during his childhood led him to become a leader in the conservation movement later in life.

The book is broken into sections of two or three paragraphs of text about Wilson’s life, then a sidebar-style paragraph in italics that explains the text further or adds interesting facts. Each section is separated from the next by either a photograph or an illustration of a row of ants. At the end are suggested activities to accompany the book. You can tell van Dyck is truly passionate about her subject and has spent a lot of time researching Wilson’s life.

Also included is how Dr. Wilson, with the help of his friend Peter Alden, developed the “BioBlitz,” a way for volunteers from all walks of life to collect organisms intensively from a given area in a short period of time to find out about the diversity that exists there. Information about how to participate in upcoming BioBlitz events (as well as information about past events) is available at the National Geographic Society. Author van Dyck has instructions for taking your own personal bioblitz walk, as well.

Recently the National Geographic Society honored Dr. Wilson with a Hubbard medal at its 125th Anniversary Gala. According to their press release, “Wilson was honored for his lifelong commitment to the planet’s rich diversity through his research and writing.”

The Boy Who Loved Ants: Edward O.Wilson introduces children to the life of this leading scientist, writer, and conservationist in an electronic format. Hopefully, learning about his life will inspire some future naturalists and scientists to learn more about the wild creatures around them, and perhaps even discover new species like Wilson did.

A Tour of Your Body Books

Ready for two examples of books that use the graphic novel-style to its best advantage?  A Tour of Your Circulatory System (First Graphics) by Karen Ballen and illustrated by Chris B. Jones, and A Tour of Your Digestive System (First Graphics) by Molly Kolpin and also illustrated by Chris B. Jones, use Peter Pea and Ruby the red blood cell to go where no human can go on their own.

circulatory-systemdigestive-system

Children are definitely curious about how their body works. These books have a gently humorous approach to explaining how food moves through the digestive system and blood moves through the circulatory system. The reader learns new vocabulary words like “platelet” and “bile.” It isn’t difficult to figure out, however, because the illustrations help make abstract concepts concrete. If they need even more help, there’s a glossary in the back.

Readers unfamiliar with the graphic novel format or finding it confusing? The books in this series have instructions on how to read them right on the back of the book. Now that is a good idea!

Educators will definitely want to have  A Tour of Your Circulatory System and  A Tour of Your Digestive System on “hand” for those units on the human body.  Both these books could work for reluctant readers at higher grades, because of the interesting visual format. And besides, who doesn’t enjoy cartoons?

One Gorilla: A Counting Book Plus

One Gorilla: A Counting Book by Anthony Browne takes the straightforward concept book and “adds” one-gorillaa gentle message about primates and humans.

Anthony Browne is an award-winning British author and illustrator, whose credits include being the Children’s Laureate from 2009-2011, and the book reflects his outstanding expertise. Just take a look at the stunning illustration on the cover.

As with many counting books, Browne introduces new vocabulary as well. The reader quickly discovers the differences between macaques, baboons and lemurs.

If you and your troop are regular visitors to the primate area of the zoo, One Gorilla will be a must have. If not, it might just inspire you to make a visit.

The Earth is Painted Green

The Earth is Painted Green: A Garden of Poems about Our Planet edited by Barbara Brenner and illustrated by  S. D. Schindler is an older collection of poetry for children that is a wonderful choice to tie Earth Day and National Poetry Month. painted-green

The poetry comes from such diverse poets as David McCord, Shel Silverstein and Margaret Wise Brown.

The illustrations are lush and mostly gently old-fashioned, which suit the poetry well. Some have rich detail and others are slightly silly, as the poems warrant.

My recommendation is to grab the book, find a quiet spot out in nature and share the poems with some children. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day.
